Adult Education: Sundays and During the Week
Most Adult Sunday School classes are suspended during the summer.

Beginning June 20:
How often have you wished you knew the original Greek behind the scripture verses that we read or hear so often? Join us for Reading the Sunday Lessons in Greek at 10:10 a.m. on Sundays, June 20-August 1 in the Walthour Library (Room 315). This Summer 2010 series of informal New Testament Greek classes is offered on a drop-in basis. No previous language expertise is required; every class begins with the Greek alphabet and pronunciation tips. Make inquiries to the The Rev. Dr. Thee Smith, 404-727-0636.
Join a Sunday School class next fall and discover a way of deepening your faith while defining relationships. Contact Amanda Stephenson, 404-365-1080 if you have questions about Adult Education. An array of Adult Christian Education classes, taught by Cathedral clergy, staff, lay members and guests from the community, are offered from 10:10–11:05 a.m. on Sunday mornings. The Dean’s Forum (Child Hall)
Dean Sam Candler leads a discussion on topics of faith and life. Hear the Dean's Forum.
Adult Inquirers Class (Room 381)
The Rev. Buddy Crawford and Canon Carolynne Williams lead a 12-week confirmation class on Sunday mornings. This class is perfect for adults who wish to be baptized, confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church. This also is a great “refresher” course for current members. The class culminates in a Diocesan Confirmation service. To register, please contact Amanda Stephenson, 404-365-1080.
Faith and Literature (Room 370)
In this class we read and discuss short stories and excerpts from novels dealing
with faith, spirituality and religion. We explore these experiences through the works
of authors such as Flannery O’Connor, John Updike, Anne Tyler, Tobias Wolff, Gail Godwin, Garrison Keillor and others. Each week our discussions will focus on a story from the collection Listening for God, Volume 3: Contemporary Literature and the Life of Faith, edited by Paula J. Carlson and Peter S. Hawkins. The book can be purchased at the Cathedral Bookstore. Come every week or drop in on a particular story of interest. Each class stands on its own. All are welcome! The class is facilitated by Ward Bondurant.
First and Second Kings (Room 380)
In 2009-2010, this in-depth Bible study class will read through First and Second Kings. Topics include the creation of the kingdom; the stories of Saul, David, Solomon; the history of the divided kingdom (Israel and Judah); the fall of both governments and the Exile in Babylon; and the role of prophetic judgment of the political situation. Almost 500 years of biblical history (circa 1050 - 587 BCE) will be covered. The class is facilitated by Jim Bingham and Gordon Mathis.
Old Fashioned Sunday School (Room 382)
Canon George Maxwell, Dean Harry Pritchett and Mack Leath invite you to gather with soon to be old friends, drink some good coffee and engage in lively discussion. As always, we will have some good coffee. We look forward to seeing you there. Read more about the class.
20s30s Evening Spiritual Discussion (Atrium)
Join the 20s30s each Sunday evening as they gather to discuss topics ranging from spirituality, to religion and culture, to the rituals of the Episcopal Church. The discussions are led by members of the 20s30s, Cathedral clergy, or other special guests. They meet in the sitting area to the left of the stairs in the Atrium beginning at 7:45 p.m., or when the 7 p.m. service in St. Mary's Chapel ends.

New Testament Greek Class
The series is taught by Phillip Stokes of McAfee School of Theology (Mercer University in Atlanta). The Beginners class will meet on the following Sundays in the summer: June 13, June 27, July 11, July 18, July 25, August 1 and August 8. All classes will follow the morning services, 1:30–2:45 p.m. in Room 316 in the Atrium. Make inquiries to the The Rev. Dr. Thee Smith, 404-727-0636.

Mondays
Women’s Prayer & Praise — 7 to 9 p.m., Lanier House Parlor. Weekly

Tuesdays
The Dean’s Men’s Bible Study — 7 to 8 a.m., Room 319. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral, and others lead a discussion of the scripture found in the weekly lectionary.
Early Morning Women's Bible Study — 7 to 8 a.m., Room 316. Led by Canon Beth Knowlton. All women are welcome; drop in when you can. Currently, we are exploring the book of Isaiah. We will meet on June 1, but will not meet again until September.
St. Monica’s Guild — 7 p.m., Gould Room. This guild, which meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month, is intended for women with young children who gather for study and fellowship. Contact Kathryn Howell to learn more. This group will meet again in August.
Wednesdays
The Dean’s Women’s Bible Study — 10:45 to 11:45 a.m., Room 319. Sam Candler, Dean of the Cathedral, and others lead a discussion of the scripture found in the weekly lectionary. This group will meet again in September.
Eat Your Word Noontime Bible Study— 11:50 a.m., Room 380. The Rev. Buddy Crawford leads this Bible Study. This summer, we are reading Archbishop Rowan William’s book, Token of Trust. Williams, in a concise and conversational manner, addresses Christian belief. Topics include God, community, prayer, resurrection and communion. Bring your lunch and join in a conversation about some of the fundamental tenets of our faith. Join us on June 2!
Financial Peace University—6:30-8:30 p.m., Room 370. Financial Peace University (FPU) is a 13-week life-changing program that teaches you how to beat debt, build wealth, find bargains, invest for the future, give like never before, and much more. The class is facilitated by FPU graduate and Cathedral member, Chris Kirkland. Register online.

The Cathedral Writers’ Group — 7 to 9 p.m., 1st and 3rd Wednesdays, Room 380. Led by Imani Dhakiya.
Thursday
Centering Prayer—6:15 to 6:45 p.m., Lanier House Chapel.
Group Spiritual Direction for Women—9:30 to 11 a.m., Lanier House Library. 2nd and 4th Thursdays, led by Canon Beth Knowlton. Contact Beth, 404-365-1043, to learn more. We’ll meet once a month in the summer: June 10, July 15 and August 12.
Avery’s Scarves Knitting Group—7 to 9 p.m., 2nd and 3rd Thursdays. Knitters gather in the Atrium from to knit scarves and hats for children with cancer. Contact Buffa Buffington, 404-237-8159, if you have questions.
St. Catherine’s Guild—This guild is for women in their 40’s/50’s with school-age/college-age children (or no children!) and meets the 3rd Thursday of every month at 7 p.m., varied locations. For more information, contact Jennifer Van Horn, 404-252-5300. This group will meet again September 16.
